Airasia Named Among Top 10 Passengger Carriers By Changi Airport

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) — AirAsia had been named as one of the top 10 airlines in the passenger carriage category by Changi Airport Group, according to a statement today.

The award recognises the contribution of airlines to Singapore’s air hub status.

“AirAsia has been a huge contributor to the growth of passenger traffic at Changi Airport,” the company said.

AirAsia Regional Head of Commercial, Kathleen Tan, received the award from Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group, Lee Seow Hiang, at the Changi Airline Awards ceremony in Singapore last night.

Singapore is one of AirAsia’s most popular destinations, with 400 flight to and from the country weekly.

Tony Fernandes named CEO of the year

AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes was named Masterclass Global CEO of the Year at the Malaysia Business Leadership Award 2010 ceremony on Saturday.

The ceremony was jointly organised by the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce and The Leaders Magazine, the airline said in a statement.

The judging panel comprised Labour Department director-general Datuk Sheikh Yahya Sheikh Mohamed, RAM Holdings group CEO Tan Sri C. Rajandram, Malaysia Book of Records founder Datuk Danny Ooi, KLMCC president Datuk Syed Amin Aljeffri and leadership guru Arthur F. Carmazzi.

AirAsia X backs a clear national aviation policy

WE welcome the assertion by Tengku Datuk Azmil Zaharuddin, the MD/CEO of MAS, that “Malaysia needs a clear aviation policy – one that offers real choices to consumers and that benefits the country.” (StarBizWeek, May 1 2010, headlined: “To compete and collaborate”.

It is good to know that MAS is willing to join hands with us to work with the Government on delineating such a policy and ensuring free and fair competition on a level playing field (which Tengku Datuk Azmil says MAS welcomes).

The whole idea, of course, is that consumers should gain and Malaysia can benefit from increased tourist arrivals.

AirAsia X Suspend flights to Abu Dhabi

AirAsia X will temporarily suspend its flights to Abu Dhabi beginning Feb 21 in a bid to re-align its fleet to cover priority areas. The suspension is a counter measures which many said due to stiff competition from Etihad Airways. AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani told they will fly back to Abu Dhabi at a later date. For the meantime they will focusing on the few new destinations in India. He added that AirAsia X need more frequencies, better airplanes and capacity before they can fly back to Abu Dhabi.

Currently, they fly with AirBus A330 and it has embarked on a seat refurbishment exercise and would be grounding planes to fit the new seats. They will get back to Abu Dhabi when the exercise completed.

Capa (Centre for AsiaPacific Aviation) Legend Award for 2009 for Fernandes

Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes was awarded the Capa (Centre for AsiaPacific Aviation) Legend Award for 2009 and become the youngest receipient so far.

The Capa Legend Award (Aviation Hall of Fame) is given to outstanding individuals who bring about a revolutionary force in the aviation industry.

Fernandes said it felt “odd” to win the big individual award and joked that maybe the judges were giving him a signal that he should be on his way out of the industry.

Fernandes said he was pleased that his fairy-tale success in introducing a budget carrier had given a lot of motivation to children and university students to believe in their dreams.

He said the award proved that Malaysian companies were capable and to win during a time of financial crisis meant even more for AirAsia.

MAS, AirAsia win awards

National carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was named Airline of The Year 2008 for the third consecutive year at the Annual KLIA Award here on Saturday.

AirAsia won the Low-Cost Airline of The Year award while AirAsia Indonesia was given Foreign Airline of The Year title. For cargo category, MasKargo won Airline of The Year award while Korean Air was named Foreign Airline of The Year.

The KLIA Awards, organised by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), offers recognition to 15 different categories of airlines and service providers operating at KL International Airport.
