AirAsia to set up new low-cost airline with Vietjet Air
AirAsia yesterday said in a statement it had bought from Madam Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao a 30% equity stake in Vietjet Air for 180 billion dong that would allow it to set up a Vietnam-based joint venture low-cost airline to be known as Vietjet AirAsia.
The stake sale is believed to have the approval from Vietnam’s Transportation Ministry on Tuesday and the joint venture airline did not require fresh capital injection.
It is highly likely that AirAsia will second some of its aircraft for the operations in Vietnam and drive the venture given its expertise in running low-cost airlines. Vietjet AirAsia will operate both domestic and international flights and is currently finalising details regarding routes, frequencies and launch of flight.
But this airline owes almost 30 billion dong (US$1.6mil) for jet fuel and services, and has been unable to operate its sole plane since November, according to reports originating from Vietnam.
Vietjet Air has a share capital of 600 billion dong (RM112mil) and its founding shareholders are Sovico Holdings, HCMC Housing Joint Stock Commercial Bank and some individuals from Vietnam’s civil aviation industry. Following the completion of the share transfer, the shareholding structure in the joint venture airline will be AirAsia via AA International Ltd with 30%, Sovico Holdings with 51% and Nguyen Thanh Hung with 19%.
The move by AirAsia to enter Vietnam is to strengthen its base in the Asean region which has a population of nearly 600 million.

Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne route by Emirates
Another good news for those who want to travel to Melbourne as Emirated was granted a KL International Airport (KLIA)-Melbourne route which makes them the first foreign airline to ply the route. Several other airlines had pulled out of that route several years ago. Travellers now have more option of using Emirates, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) or AirAsia X.
Emirates will operate a daily service and is offering a promotional fare of RM1,880 for an all-inclusive return economy class ticket. It offers three-class layout for this sector using an A340-500 aircraft.
For records, Emirates began mounting flights on the Dubai-KL-Dubai route in 1996 and now flies twice daily but yesterday’s flight brings its daily frequency to three. With the Dubai-KL-Melbourne-KL-Dubai flight, KL is essentially a transit stop for the carrier. Currently, the bulk of the traffic will originate from Dubai and Europe but “when the route establishes, there will be more traffic going in and out of KL.
The new frequency from Dubai to Melbourne via KLIA would not have an impact on the carrier’s direct flights to Melbourne that used the ultra-long aircraft. The rationale for the additional frequency is the growing traffic volumes on the Kangaroo route and KLIA is seen as a good stopover for passengers from Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

AirAsia-Jet Star Alliance
Another history was recorded yesterday where the world’s first budget airline alliance was forged yesterday between AirAsia and Australia’s Jetstar. The alliance will enable both companies to pool resources and expertise, procure new aircraft and revenue-sharing deals which could lead to cost savings of between A$200mil and A$300mil annually.
Other than the cost saving of which will only be materialized 16 months from the signing date, what can we expect as the customer from this deal.? Based on what has been reported in the media, I summarized as follows :
- Negotiating on how they can procure fuel in bulk for the needs of both carriers in markets that we operate in and this will lead to significant savings for us.
- Sharing spare parts and that is a big (area for cost savings)
- A key component of the agreement is its ability to influence aircraft makers to manufacture robust planes that suit the LCC specifications as most planes made today are more suited for full service carriers and remodification costs a lot more. Qantas Airways Ltd CEO Alan Joyce, who was at the press conference, said the parties “have the purchasing power to influence aircraft makers’’ to design the next generaton of narrow body aircraft for the LCC industry.
- The next step for the partners would be to look at joint venture on routes and other commercial actitivies including joint procurement of hotel inventory for holiday packages.
- Whether AirAsia X gets to fly the controversial Kuala Lumpur-Sydney route which has been dropped by Jetstar a year ago as they focused on Tokyo route.
- Are we able to Fly to Tokyo through AirAsia X alliance JetStar !
We just wait and see how they going to make all this happen.

MASholidays
Despite the economic downturn, MAS has enjoyed a steady increase in bookings through MASholidays (www.masholidayz.com). The increase is due to a major shift in consumer behaviour where they now purchase holiday packages online without a travel consultant to guide them. “The DIY option for MASholidays is easily done online whereby customers can choose what they want, from air tickets, hotel, transfers to tour packages. This demonstrates that customers are more knowledgeable and more confident of the security aspect of online transactions. That’s why big ticket item purchases such as long haul and extended duration holidays which have a higher than average selling price have not deterred customers from transacting online,” says Dr Amin.
MAS expects the domestic and regional destinations to be popular, and the long-haul demand to pick up if the economic recovery is sustainable. Another new service by MAS is on their flymas.mobi which allows travellers to book, pay, check-in and fly with us via the mobile phone. Travellers can also check for the best fares, addresses and locations of MAS’s offices globally and share their travel itinerary with friends.
MAS will offer two new weekly non-stop flights from Kuala Lumpur to Brisbane come March 2010. They are also looking at key regions such as Asia Pacific, China, India and the Middle East where growth is more robust. Their aggressive campaigns paid off with MAS registering 3.3 million passengers in the third quarter of 2009, the highest number since early 2008.
“We increased domestic capacity by 10% to cope with the demand, adding frequencies to popular destinations such as Bali, Seoul, Taipei, Maldives and Colombo. During the school holidays, Malaysians flew to cities like Brisbane, Sydney, Tokyo and Shanghai, all of which are within nine hours of flight time. On the other hand, passengers from Europe, UK and Australia were travelling to destinations beyond the nine-hour range. Long haul travels increased in the last three months with the top three popular destinations being London, Melbourne and Hong Kong.
My Comments
The MASholidays and flymas.mobi is nothing new as Airasia has introduced this very much earlier. Another latest news from AirAsia Group is where the GO Holiday is launching a new website (www.airasiago.com) this month featuring special interest tours like spa, golf, wellness and honeymoon and special project products like EPL and motorsports.
