For those who want a specific seat, they can either purchase a “hot seat” for RM25 one way or a “standard seat” for RM5.

They have the option of choosing a window or aisle seat or anywhere else.

The hot seats are those in the first five front rows and the two rows at the emergency exit. A hot seat comes automatically with express boarding facility.

The standard seat allows passengers to choose the other seats.

The Xpress boarding facility as a standalone service will be scrapped from Tuesday. Those who have already booked or paid through this facility will be given a hot seat. Those who do not like the seat assigned to them can change them.

“Passengers now have a choice on whether they want to sit by the aisle, window or anywhere else,” AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said at the launch of the service yesterday.

“The days of running to the plane or pretending to be a rugby player while trying to grab a seat are over.”

He said passengers had always wanted seating options as practised by long-haul services on AirAsia X flights.

“The response has been good so far with 7,000 choice of seats booked in five days.

The service was opened for sale from Feb 5.

On the 500,000 free tickets promotion, Fernandes said the response was “fantastic” with a record 279,000 seats sold in one day despite the economic downturn.

“We will not be cutting down on our plans. We believe we have the product that people want which can bring in more tourists,” he said.

He added that the new LCCT departure terminal would be ready by March 15.

Instead of the traditional air ticket, a Flight Itinerary with your travel details will be emailed or handed to you after you have made your payment. It is important that you provide correct numbers where you can be reached.

You do not have to bring your Flight Itinerary with you for check-in. All you need to remember is your Booking Number, or mention your name. You must show your identity card or passport for identification and check-in purposes.

It is more convenient and so much easier to travel this way. You do not have to bring a ticket along – it is one less thing to forget! And most importantly, it helps us keep our costs low so that we can pass on these savings back to you and keep your fares low!

The only documentation you have to bring are those you should have with you at all times – your Identity Card, or if you are a tourist, your Passport.

This introduction is believed to be one of AirAsia’s strategy to compete with the close rival MAS. If you read MAS advertisement one of their selling point/advantage is on the seat arrangement where the customer don’t have to rush for the seat.

1. How can I pick a seat if I purchased my flight 1 hour before the scheduled time of departure?
Subject to availability, you may purchase Pick A Seat at the time of booking or a seat will be allocated upon check-in.

2. How will a change in the aircraft configuration affect my Pick A Seat?
Should there be a reconfiguration of the aircraft, seats will be re-assigned according to those which you have pre-booked.

3. Why do I have to pay for Pick A Seat?
Pick A Seat allows you to choose seats which you desire and feel most comfortable on. You can also keep your travel party together with Pick A Seat*.

4. What is the difference between a Hot Seat and a Standard Seat?
Guests who purchase a Hot Seat will have the choice of selecting seats from the first 5 rows of the aircraft or 2 rows at the emergency exit. Guests who have pre-booked a Hot Seat will automatically qualify for the Xpress Boarding service. This would mean that guests with a Hot Seat will board the aircraft ahead of those who have chosen the Standard Seat and those that have not purchased Pick A Seat.

5. What is the difference between Pick A Seat and Xpress boarding?
Xpress boarding will remain as a value added service for guests who have purchased the Hot Seat.

6. Are there any additional charges for guests on wheelchairs?
No. A guest who is on a wheelchair may purchase Pick A Seat at the time of booking; otherwise, the guest will be seated upon check-in at an available seat in accordance to our cabin safety standards.

7. Can I change my seat after I have made the selection?
Yes, you may change your seat provided it is within the same category and subject to availability.

8. How will Pick A Seat affect guests who have purchased Xpress boarding?
Guests will be notified of our new service via email. A Hot Seat will be automatically assigned to you or you may contact us to request for a seat of your choice.

9. How will a merged flight affect guests holding the same seat number?
In the event of merged flight, the Pick A Seat fee will be fully refunded to the guest whose flight has been cancelled.

10. Can I purchase a Hot seat / Standard seat after I have completed my booking?
Yes. The Hot Seat / Standard Seat can be purchased up to 4 hours before the scheduled flight departure time via our sales office, airport sales counter or our call center.

11. Is there a special rate offered to senior citizens and children?
There are no special rates for Senior Citizens and Children. Senior Citizens will be allowed to board after those holding a Hot Seat. Children travelling with adults will board according to their seat row numbers.

12. Is there a group rate?
There are no group rates available.

13. Can I pre-book a seat through Pick A Seat during self check-in?
Pick A Seat can only be pre-booked during web check-in. This facility is currently not available when using our Kiosk check-in service.

14. Is there a different fee for a window, middle or aisle seat?
A different fee applies to the Hot and Standard Seat but the fee is not differentiated by the window, middle or aisle seating position.

15. Will my Pick A Seat fee be refunded if I choose the refund / credit shell option during a flight cancellation?
Yes, a full refund/credit shell will be offered to guests if you select the refund /credit shell option during a canceled flight.

2. What benefits do I get from “No Fuel Surcharge”?
A: With “No Fuel Surcharge”, AirAsia’s and AirAsia X’s seat prices will consist of only the air fare, administration fee and airport tax and you will enjoy even lower cost of travel from AirAsia and AirAsia X. The lower fare will also mean that you’ll enjoy more savings. You’ll also be able to compare prices more easily and needn’t have to worry about the difference quoted between seat fare and the final amount that you have to pay.

3. When does “No Fuel Surcharge” come into effect?
A: “No Fuel Surcharge” is applicable to AirAsia and AirAsia X seats purchased from 11 November 2008 onwards.

A: Please refer to Q3. “No Fuel Surcharge” is only applicable to AirAsia and AirAsia X seats purchased from 11 November 2008 onwards.

7. Will the fare rules change with the introduction of “No Fuel Surcharge”? Will I still get a refund if I miss the flight?
A: AirAsia and AirAsia X’s fare rules and terms and conditions of carriage are still applicable for seats purchased under “No Fuel Surcharge”. As our check-in counters are closed 45 minutes and 60 minutes respectively before scheduled departure time, please allow yourself sufficient time to reach the airport so as not to miss your flight.

8. Is “No Fuel Surcharge” applicable to AirAsia X flights as well?
A: “No Fuel Surcharge” is applicable to AirAsia and AirAsia X seats purchased from 11 November 2008 onwards.

9. Does “No Fuel Surcharge” include the optional extras such as GoInsure Travel Insurance, Xpress Boarding, Snack Attack In-flight Meals and Checked Baggage Handling Fee?
A: The optional extras as mentioned above are not included in the “No Fuel Surcharge” fare as this is optional. These options are available to you when you book online.

How to earn point ?
You can earn point for every money spent on :

The rising jet fuel prices and the continuous upward spiral caused by the situation in the Middle East and other external factors, have made it imperative for us to reintroduce the fuel surcharge, despite our best efforts to resist it for as long as we could. We hope that this will only be a temporary measure, and AirAsia will continue to ensure our fares remain low despite the fuel surcharge, which is the lowest in the world. While other carriers were already adjusting fares and increasing fuel and admin charges to counter rising operating costs when jet fuel price went above USD$100 per barrel on 2 March this year, the strong growth of our ancillary income has helped us delay the implementation of fuel surcharge for as long as possible.

As the people’s airline, we insist on being transparent and decided to announce to our guests on the reintroduction of fuel surcharge.
