The airline has introduced its “Pick A Seat” service for all flights where every passenger would automatically be assigned a seat number when they make a booking.

For those who want a specific seat, they can either purchase a “hot seat” for RM25 one way or a “standard seat” for RM5.

They have the option of choosing a window or aisle seat or anywhere else.

The hot seats are those in the first five front rows and the two rows at the emergency exit. A hot seat comes automatically with express boarding facility.

The standard seat allows passengers to choose the other seats.

The Xpress boarding facility as a standalone service will be scrapped from Tuesday. Those who have already booked or paid through this facility will be given a hot seat. Those who do not like the seat assigned to them can change them.

“Passengers now have a choice on whether they want to sit by the aisle, window or anywhere else,” AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said at the launch of the service yesterday.

“The days of running to the plane or pretending to be a rugby player while trying to grab a seat are over.”

He said passengers had always wanted seating options as practised by long-haul services on AirAsia X flights.

“The response has been good so far with 7,000 choice of seats booked in five days.

The service was opened for sale from Feb 5.

On the 500,000 free tickets promotion, Fernandes said the response was “fantastic” with a record 279,000 seats sold in one day despite the economic downturn.

“We will not be cutting down on our plans. We believe we have the product that people want which can bring in more tourists,” he said.

He added that the new LCCT departure terminal would be ready by March 15.

Ticketless concept is a replacement of the current method of traditional air tickets that has been used by AirAsia over the last many years. With ticketless travel, all you need to do is to book your flight and you will be issued a Booking Number.

Instead of the traditional air ticket, a Flight Itinerary with your travel details will be emailed or handed to you after you have made your payment. It is important that you provide correct numbers where you can be reached.

You do not have to bring your Flight Itinerary with you for check-in. All you need to remember is your Booking Number, or mention your name. You must show your identity card or passport for identification and check-in purposes.

It is more convenient and so much easier to travel this way. You do not have to bring a ticket along – it is one less thing to forget! And most importantly, it helps us keep our costs low so that we can pass on these savings back to you and keep your fares low!

The only documentation you have to bring are those you should have with you at all times – your Identity Card, or if you are a tourist, your Passport.

My 2 cents :
Print your itinerary with the confirmation number. Have it handy for your flight. Air Asia is a ticketless airline.

If you feel annoying to rush for AirAsia seats, effective today you can pick your favorite seat in advance when you book online for flight commencing 17 February 2009.Pick A Seat allows you to assign your seats and choose from Hot or Standard Seats. Now, you can board first and enjoy extra legroom with Hot Seats or keep your travel party together with Standard Seats.

The hot seats will cost you extra RM25 while the standard seats is RM5.

This introduction is believed to be one of AirAsia’s strategy to compete with the close rival MAS. If you read MAS advertisement one of their selling point/advantage is on the seat arrangement where the customer don’t have to rush for the seat.

In near future, I am of the view that many more innovative products/ features will be introduced by AirAsia in light of strong and healthy competition by MAS. Later we will give our review on MAS MH Value Fares.

The details of this you can read here.

The seating arrangement in this diagram reflects those of the Airbus A320 only.

The fees

The announcement made from AirAsia Facebook Page :

Please be informed that AirAsia will be reintroducing fuel surcharges beginning 3 May 2011 for all domestic and international routes. The reintroduction of fuel surcharge by AirAsia is to offset the escalating jet fuel, which has exceeded USD$140 per barrel

The rising jet fuel prices and the continuous upward spiral caused by the situation in the Middle East and other external factors, have made it imperative for us to reintroduce the fuel surcharge, despite our best efforts to resist it for as long as we could. We hope that this will only be a temporary measure, and AirAsia will continue to ensure our fares remain low despite the fuel surcharge, which is the lowest in the world. While other carriers were already adjusting fares and increasing fuel and admin charges to counter rising operating costs when jet fuel price went above USD$100 per barrel on 2 March this year, the strong growth of our ancillary income has helped us delay the implementation of fuel surcharge for as long as possible.

As the people’s airline, we insist on being transparent and decided to announce to our guests on the reintroduction of fuel surcharge. AirAsia remains committed to its low-cost model and will not transfer the full cost of the fuel price hike to its guests, choosing instead to counter the spike by aggressively growing revenue through ancillary products and services. Our recent partnership with Expedia, the world’s largest online travel agency and other initiatives currently in the pipeline will further increase our revenue from ancillary income.

All flight bookings made before May 3 will not be affected by the fuel surcharge. So book your flight now on AirAsia.com to avoid paying fuel surcharge from now till May 3!
