AirAsia X backs a clear national aviation policy

WE welcome the assertion by Tengku Datuk Azmil Zaharuddin, the MD/CEO of MAS, that “Malaysia needs a clear aviation policy – one that offers real choices to consumers and that benefits the country.” (StarBizWeek, May 1 2010, headlined: “To compete and collaborate”.

It is good to know that MAS is willing to join hands with us to work with the Government on delineating such a policy and ensuring free and fair competition on a level playing field (which Tengku Datuk Azmil says MAS welcomes).

The whole idea, of course, is that consumers should gain and Malaysia can benefit from increased tourist arrivals.

AirAsia Flights to Sydney and Seoul

AirAsia X’s expansion into Sydney and Seoul will be delayed as it has failed to get the nod from the Malaysian Government to fly to the two cities, reported the Star daily.

The rejection will force the carrier to formulate a back-up plan to utilise some of the new aircraft that will be delivered later this year.

“It is critical for our own business, for us to sustain our business model. We are committing huge amount of capital – and we do need the routes,” AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani told The STAR recently.

In July last year, it was reported that the government was putting the award of rights for Seoul and Sydney to AirAsia X on hold, in a move to get its sister company AirAsia Bhd to pay around RM110 million owed to government-linked company Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd for services rendered.

After settling the bill late last year, however, it is understood that the rights are further delayed by a need to appease the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines (MAS), which is currently servicing the routes.
